Toba Mist, Indonesia

The Origin Story

The Producer

Smallholder farmers around Lake Toba in Sumatra cultivate coffee using time honoured techniques. Generations of families grow Catimor and Typica varietals on small plots that form the backbone of local economies.

The Land

Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake, provides nutrient rich soils and a humid microclimate ideal for coffee cultivation. The surrounding highlands, shaped by ancient eruptions, create distinctive growing conditions unique to Sumatra.

The Craft

Producers use the traditional wet hulling (Giling Basah) method, which imparts the earthy, spicy qualities Sumatra is known for. Community washing stations support processing and maintain regional consistency despite small farm sizes.
